Facebook is now the world’s most visited website

For years together, Google has been on the top position for “most visited website“. Facebook.com has now defeated google in terms of traffic ever since more and more people around the world are registering on facebook.

Facebook offers constant connectivity between friends, family members, also enables us to share files and other such stuff. This has attracted a lot of people and new terms like “facebook addiction” have come up as a result of this. Google.com was considered to be the “gateway” to the internet just a few years ago, but that has changed and a lot of people go right to facebook after opening their browsers. Not only facebook, but other social engagement websites are growing in terms of traffic and visitors.

LOOKING AT THE STATS!

Let us take a look at alexa ranks of Google.com and Facebook.com

Taking a look at the 3 month graph of traffic to Google.com, we can see a major drop in traffic right around month of August.

Who knows what it could be! Probably some kind of technical difficulty?

Lets look at a larger time span.

We can clearly see that there has been a slight downward trend in the traffic.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR WEBMASTERS?

This major drop in traffic is in indication that webmasters should start focusing on social media for driving visitors to their websites. Since more and more people are sharing content among each other through social media, why not utilize this big opportunity and focus on social media rather than just plain old search engine optimization?

In case of facebook.com the daily reach graph has remained kind of constant through out. So this definitely means that while the google’s daily reach has been going down, facebook’s daily visitors remained constant. This led to change in the alexa rank which put facebook.com on the #1 position.
