Thunderstorm in Mumbai

As a result of a lot of heat in the past few days, the city of Mumbai had really heated up. The moisture levels had gone up drastically by yesterday afternoon. The temperature peaked to around 34 degrees C by 3pm in the afternoon. The massive heating of the atmosphere created a low pressure region over the skies of Mumbai. The moisture was rising up at a high rate due to the heated ground. The moisture around here is always high because of proximity to the Arabian Sea.

Dont forget to read “The reason for less rainfall in India“!

Since there was no wind blowing, the moisture stayed in one place. It had nothing to do but to rise higher and higher.

Once this moisture rose to certain height it met with the cold air. The constantly rising moisture accumulated and formed thin sheet of cloud which then became much thicker by the end of the day. The low pressure also invited moisture bearing clouds from eastern region.

Along the whole day, the constant heat made the updraft of moisture go higher and higher, where it froze into ice crystals. the brushing of ice crystals with each other results in accumulation of static charge which we saw in the evening.

Here are some of the images of the Thunderstorm in Mumbai.

And it is not over yet, a short video which shows some more lightning.

During the storm, I felt very calm. The heat had disappeared, and all of a sudden I felt peace in my mind. While the storm arrived, I was in the bus, going home from college. As I walked through home in the rain, some very pleasant thought came to my mind.

In this tremendous heat that we had been taking for last few days, the nature always has something cool to make us “cool”. When I reached home, I dried myself and rushed to the terrace with my camera. The rain had slowed down a little bit. There was calmness in the surrounding. The kind of silence which gives you peace was felt through out while I was recording and capturing photographs.

The violent lightning didn’t even feel violent, all I felt was tremendous love being showered by the nature upon us, yet we ignore it and blindly try to find happiness in materialistic ways of our life.

I hope you all enjoyed this, don’t forget to leave a comment and share this post with your friends.

Amazing! I was just trying to figure out, why it started raining again. I saw the the withdrawal line had already passed over the city and I know it had something to do with local systems only. But that was a great explanation, with a great feeling attached to it. Where do you work? Don’t say IMD cos you’re better..
