Top Security Cameras Wifi and Rechargeable Batteries
Yes, you heard it right! Security cameras wifi and with rechargeable batteries. Listen, I installed thousands of security cameras, but not even I could expect that technology would go so far as to create standalone equipment. Moreover, some security cameras have a solar panel included to recharge their batteries. Honestly, I am glad when I’m writing this article, mainly because I love technology and this is a vast improvement for my work as well. It’s just insane how far we are using our knowledge and skills. I am going to list some of the top security cameras and then talk about why the traditional ones can’t compare to them.

Powering up the security cameras
All of the cameras I have installed had some external power source. Like for example, I usually installed 5A, 12V DC power supplies that were more than enough for about four security cameras.
Most traditional security cameras use at least 700mA – 1A (when on full load and IR-infrared- active). When I was installing any power supply, I was taking that into account. It was something like this:
- One security camera à 1A power supply;
- Two security cameras à 3A power supply;
- Three security cameras à 4A power supply;
- Four security cameras à 5A power supply;
Most of the times, for a higher number of security cameras, we couldn’t find 6A power supplies or 7A, so we were using 10A. If the client installed more than four security cameras, there was also the chance that he might invest some more in the future, and 10A power supply was enough to supply the gap of four more security cameras on top of the five he had. Then we moved up to 20A and so forth.
Wifi and rechargeable batteries combination
I’m somewhat relieved and happy that this technology has opened a new way for me to suggest my client’s latest solutions for their security system. It’s easier for me as well because, for at least 60% of my clients that worked with the company I worked as a technician, this solution would have proven a cheaper and more natural solution.
The security cameras wifi capabilities, in combination with rechargeable batteries, is the best. I can’t count how many times I wished I didn’t have to spread out cables in the walls or the attic of a client’s home. Taking into account the fact that the client was already living in it, that meant the house was not in construction, so it was hard enough to spread cables. Now, with this technology, I don’t even have to spread any cable at all, it’s just insane.
I do worry, however, whether the Wifi signal is going to be strong enough in a client’s house to be able to install outdoor security cameras. It’s still a tradeoff when it comes to this because I might recommend my client:
- A better router (in case the current one is not enough);
- Multiple routers (when the primary router is located in a weird corner or place inside the house and requires a second router to take over the signal);
- Small AP Wifi extenders
- A very powerful long-range indoor antenna from Ubiquiti.
Storage
These security cameras provide internal storage, as well. Although, I’m concerned if I would install one of these outdoor. Sure, it’s fantastic that the storage is all internal and that you use micro SD cards, but if a thief steals the security camera, there is no way to find out who has taken it. I would still rely on some external services such as Cloud storage or Local PC storage, a DVR or NVR (for the specific model of security camera).
Micro SD cards are not that expensive compared to standard surveillance HDD’s, and this is a good deal if you plan on using these 100% indoor. Some packages contain a micro SD card as a bonus, isn’t that nice?
